Rehearsals are well underway now and I am only making small changes to the piece as we go. What has been nice on the project is to work with musicians who are comfortable improvisors. This means that I have included aspects where there is freedom in the music. In this sections (below) the wind players have ‘chords‘ which the trumpet player, Percy Pursglove, decides how long to hold the notes and when to play them. The strings have a note (D) which they are told to improvise the rhythm. This means every performance will be slightly different each time.
