Hi all,
My name is Sebastiano Dessanay and I will be composing music for the Small Heath community as part of the for-Wards project. After having studied composition and lived in Birmingham for 5 years, I am excited at the opportunity to capture some sonorities of this vibrant city and incorporate them into one composition.
My intention is to produce some music that will be reflecting some important characteristics of one of Birmingham’s 40 wards: South Yardley with a focus on Small Heath. By discussing with the community the aspects that make Small Heath unique in terms of sonic environments, we will try to focus our attention on some specific locations, and will try to capture some sounds during some pre-planned walks across the neighborhood.
I would also like to put emphasis on some aspects and specific musical characteristics of the different ethnicities that populate Small Heath. By adding these elements to the field recordings and by using my contemporary compositional style to write for a professional ensemble, I hope to produce a significant piece of work that is both unique to the Small Heath community and that belongs to the whole Birmingham.
