An Ode To York’s Wood with Justin K Broadrick

7-10pm at The George Hotel Basement

**Limited places**

Justin K Broadrick is currently zipping up his boots and going back to his roots with composition ‘An ode to Yorks Wood’, commissioned by for-Wards in partnership with Access to Music.

Shard End has undoubtedly shaped and influenced Justin Broadrick’s musical journey, which is apparent in his work with Napalm Death, God Flesh through to Jesu and JK Flesh. Justin has since gone on to travel the world, further establishing his sound, which is refreshingly uncompromising, much like the ward of Shard End that he grew up in.

Therefore, you could consider ‘An Ode to Yorks Wood’ to be something of a home coming, made possible with fellow musician, collaborator and Shard Ender Rowen Coleing. Rowen has made it possible for communities from the 4 wards of Bordesley Green, Hodge Hill, Shard End and Washwood Heath to collaborate with Justin and explore the sonic fabric of their neighbourhoods. These sonic explorations have taken place through the communities’ memories, stories and guidance in order to create a sonic map of Hodge Hill district.

Bhangra bass lines have been captured with direction from the Women’s Empowering Women group. The sounds of a winter wonderland have been made real with people from Hodge Hill Arts. The Friends of Ward End Park have helped to create drum sounds made from spuds in buckets, rakes and fences. Total chaos, distortion and feedback have been harnessed from the energetic Kids at the Shard End Pump. And what about the selection of the sounds that underpin ‘An Ode to Yorks Wood’? Well, a totally democratic process ensured that these found sounds were selected by the communities of the Hodge Hill district through found sound bingo, and who in East Birmingham doesn’t like bingo? Exactly.

Justin K Broadrick and Rowen Coleing perform ‘An Ode to Yorks Wood’ with support from Access to Music and Hodge Hill Arts.
