for-Wards Gig Guide: 3rd – 9th March

March 3, 2017

Category: Blog posts

Hello all! It’s time for the third for-Wards Gig Guide! This week the buzzword has been alternative – we’ve looked for gigs and events that are a bit offbeat, a little off the beaten path. Take a look for yourselves, and see if you can step out of your comfort zone this week!

Lunchtime Guitar Concert @ Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, 3rd March

We’re starting off with something a little different this week – the Lunchtime Guitar Concerts are a popular part of the music scene in Birmingham, and this week we’re promised a 40 minute performance by Leo Turner as a soloist, taking us through Latin, Classical and Spanish guitar repertoires within the beautiful setting of The Round Room.

Also, did we mention this is free AND can easily fit into your lunch hour, running from 1:10-1:50pm?

LaSharVu @ The Pizza Express Jazz Club, 4th March

The idea of combining music and pizza has been one toyed with for yonks, but The Pizza Express Jazz Club finally cracked the code, bringing us regular concerts in their location in Brindleyplace. Whilst this may sound slightly gimmicky, don’t be fooled – the venue is not only intimate and atmospheric, it has also hosted some of the world’s best. LaSharVu have a musical resume that would make anyone jealous. It’s actually easier to just give a list of names they have worked with, performed with or recorded with – artists such as Clean Bandit, Mark Ronson, Emile Sande, Sam Smith, Alicia Keys, Primal Scream, Madonna, Laura Mvula – the list never really stops!

The highly respected trio also have their own cult following, and this week is your chance to catch them performing their uplifting acoustic set in a unique and intimate venue!

The Seshen @ The Hare & Hounds, 6th March

Birmingham Promoters have really pulled it out of the bag this time – The Seshen are a San Francisco Bay Area-based seven-piece, led by vocalist Lalin St. Juste and bassist/producer Akiyoshi Ehara. Multidimensional would be our best stab at describing the outfit in one word – a combination of R&B, synth-pop and electronica.

Even that description is underselling the complete package – unique, intriguing and firmly grounded with solid songwriting, The Seshen are perhaps best tried for yourself, rather than reading about them – here’s their single ‘Distant Heart’.

A Streetcar Named Desire @ Sutton Arts Theatre, 9th March

This is your chance to see a play in a theatre with over 100 years of heritage. The story of this theatre started in 1944, when Paul Rice called Bill Wesley Harkcom about starring in a play he was producing. This led to the creation of the Sutton Arts Council in 1964, since which the new company has put on high quality and well received productions every year.

As well as the strength of their heritage, it should also be mentioned that the production – A Streetcar Named Desire – is widely regarded as one of the best plays of the 20th century, and is DEFINITELY worth going out of your way to see performed!
