Newtown Field Recording Session

October 31, 2014

Category: community

Hi again,

Last Sunday I (Kirsty) met up with a group of lovely people from the Newtown area. I really learnt a lot about the different opinions of the area and how it is changing. I got everyone to come up with one word to describe Newtown. This was great for stimulating discussion and also gave me descriptive words to help inform the piece of music I will be composing:

I spoke with one resident about how the area has a lot of different layers and she was keen to have this symbolised in the piece.

An unexpected challenge was that some people could only come for half of the session so in the end we didn’t have a lot of time to do the walk. However I found the talks and discussions very thought provoking and I will also go out to the areas we missed and do some recording independently. If we had more time we could have discussed how we would do the field recording element (stay in one area, be very quiet, keep the recording going throughout the walk).

The next stage of the project is to now go and listen to all of the recordings and start selecting the parts I might use in the music. I will then need to work on a structure for the piece and start thinking about how to combine the recordings with the instrumental ensemble.
