Meet the Composers: Kirsty Devaney

October 20, 2014

Category: community

Hi, I am Kirsty,

I am one of the composers on For-Wards. I have been living, studying and working in Birmingham for over 5 years now and very excited about getting to know some areas of Birmingham that I don’t know so well yet. I have done a lot of work in schools in Birmingham and run a music project for local teenagers. I will be working with members of the community from Newtown (Aston) to create a piece based on their stories and the sounds of the area:

I love creating music that has a unique sound, so I am looking forward to experimenting with incorporating field recordings from Newtown into my piece. To hear some of my other music please go to: https://soundcloud.com/kirstydevaney

So far in the project we have been doing some ‘test runs’ to try out the process of recording sounds in different communities. The questions that have arisen are:

1) What aspects of the community make it unique?IMG-3132.JPG
2) Are there specific sounds to a community that make it different?
3) Are some sounds too generic to be included? (e..g. Traffic)
4) What happens if people are talking during the recording?
5) Do we want the sound of footsteps all of the time?
6) What route will we take through the community?
